In her photography, she shows us Glam Rock and fairy worlds, interprets fashion with an often sexual aesthetic which is shaped by her psychological knowledge and full of hidden emotion. She prefers to work with natural light-a preference which has emerged from the initial lack of equipment and the will to capture the "right moment". It's been so long since I have posted that I forgot my password. Anyway, I'm back, inspired and ready to live amongst the trees. I found this project through a new favorite website called Daily Icon. They have written a little more information about it here:

Originally designed for Sir Basil Goulding, a great gardener and art collector; He was so concerned about his beautiful gardens along the Dargle Valley that he wanted the new building to take up as little of the garden as possible. The resulting design cantilevered over the river, and is supported on the only rock outcrop available without disturbing the natural vegetation of the river gorge. Diagonal bracing effectively converts the side elevations into beam structures, and a steel column support at the second bay from the rock face below together with rock anchors make possible the three-bay cantilever over the river.

The summerhouse was listed for preservation in 2000 and we were subsequently commissioned to restore it. Internationally, it is considered a modernist icon and continues to inspire with its recent inclusion in The Iconic House by Thames & Hudson.

Born in Paris, Eric Traoré first heads towards a scientific education, validating his 3rd year of University in Physical Science, before choosing to devote his time to his passion, photography, by starting at the famous Louis Lumière School in Paris. Brilliantly he graduates as the major of his promotion, is discovered as a very talented artist, and publishes his first issue in Citizen K. These first debut images then goes on display in the Museum of Fashion in Marseille, France.

Anyway, I have just read about Don't Shoot the Messenger's afternoon party which if I play my cards right could be a welcome escape from the office walls...

Alexander McQueen's death caused a great deal of emotion to not only those in the fashion industry, but to all of those who drew inspiration from his forward thinking world view. To move forward, his close friends Nick Knight collaborated with Bjork to film this spectacular, haunting tribute for McQueen using his most iconic designs for SHOWstudio. Bjork’s eerie vocals connects brilliantly with the video to embody the feel of McQueen’s pieces of art.

There is an amazing labyrinth here in Berlin which provides a rather thrilling alternative to a Friday night. Shortly after returning, I received an email from my sister who lives in Sydney and has the enviable job of working at one of Sydney's leading contemporary art galleries. Anyway, it turns out that the current exhibition also draws on inspiration from an infinite labyrinth:

"The Garden of Forking Paths"

The title comes from a Jorge Luis Borges story of the same name which is about an infinite labyrinth where all options are possible at the same time. For the show we were aiming to look at the artist's process as transformation but also hidden from view. Like the labyrinth, a single idea can result in so many different possibilities but when you visit a gallery, you are just faced with one....the artwork."
The photos that you see are a sneak peak into the exhibition, which I am lucky enough to receive. It looks amazing!

A layered corporate identity for mid-sized architectural studio, 1.1 Architects, consisting of a three-dimensional mark, logo, typography, colour, photography and written language. The collaborative practice was interpreted through the mark which was based on the geometric principles
of the tesseract where imagination and varying inputs can create many possible outcomes. Unique in its three-dimensional form the picture mark referenced the process of architecture - planned, sketch and complete upon construction.

Peregrine Honig

I came upon twin fawns in the display case of a mom and pop toy science store in Kansas City, Missouri. It took me two years to win the trust of the shop owner and save the money to buy them. A taxidermist spotted a dead deer by the side of the road. He stopped to properly dispose of the body and realized she was pregnant. He opened her and found near full-term twins, he removed and preserved them.

Deer rarely have twins and the taxidermist retained the uterine gesure of their bodies. Their prematurity exaggerates the delicacy of an incredibly sweet thing. The points of their hooves, the length of their lashs, the spots of their hides, nose to small nose in an ur-cartoonish realism. Viewers’ eyes trick them into believing the fawns are breathing. The tragedy of beauty is its transience.

The twins live forever in their own demise. They are sleeping beauties. They have been muses since I first saw them.

We dress death in lilies and bronze the names of our dead sons on walls. We erect altars of toys and hold candlelight vigils to express hope. My twin fawns sleep endlessly under glass on their pedestal in my studio. The twins never opened their eyes yet their wondrous fatality evokes an acceptable alternative to death.

Having worked together on various projects (and having been a couple for many years), photographer Maurice Scheltens (1972) and visual artist Liesbeth Abbenes (1970) have decided to consolidate their professional collaboration. We are delighted to introduce to you: Scheltens & Abbenes. Scheltens & Abbenes are the sum total of the unique talent of a still-life photographer and the creative craftsmanship of an artist/stylist. Technical perfection added to individual handicraft, strong pictorial clarity in addition to tailor-made styling. Combining their distinct but partly overlapping fields of expertise, Scheltens & Abbenes create commissioned photographs for cultural institutions and large companies (Vitra, Nike, Hermes, Viktor & Rolf) and editorials for magazines (Fantastic Man, Wallpaper, Another Magazine). The specialty of Scheltens & Abbenes is to meticulously arrange objects - chairs, glassware, shirts, perfume bottles - into configurations that have a strong two-dimensional or graphic character. A good example is a series of photograps for the magazine Fantastic Man. Here, they arranged a collection of knitted sweaters in such a way that the patterns and straight lines conjure up the 1920's tradition of Russian constructivism, thus combining the lavish richness of fashion with the puritanical strictness of Modernism.

Essential to their work is the process in the studio where they construct their settings. A laborious process, in which Scheltens & Abbenes continuously move things around, painstakingly join pieces together and adjust little details. During this series of steps they take numerous Polaroids and study them together intensively in order to arrive at the right composition. Scheltens & Abbenes take absolute liberty with their objects. Instead of presenting the objects as plain sellable products, they often manipulate and utilize them as building blocks for new compositions. The autonomous artistic quality of the photograph always has to prevail. In some photographs Scheltens & Abbenes reduce their objects to clean geometric lines, showing an understanding that the settings will ultimately only exist as a two-dimensional image. This can be seen for instance in the work for Hermes, in which a collection of orange packing boxes is placed in straight alignments, creating sharp rectangular shapes and figures In other works their focus is more on arranging objects in such a way that they form an entirely new object altogether. These new objects could be surreal creatures made from clothing or cosmopolitan tower blocks made from perfume bottles.

A recent development in Scheltens & Abbenes's practice is their movement towards the world of design. What started with a one-off project for Droog Design - the making of a photogram tablecloth in 2005 - seems to be getting more important in their joint undertaking. During a work period at the Grafische Werkplaats in Amsterdam they made a silk-screened folding screen and most recently they realized a collaborative projects with the Dutch designer couple Scholten & Baijings and design manufacturer Vitra.

Scheltens & Abbenes deliberately choose to operate both in the field of applied and autonomous art and use them as breeding ground for one another. By the same logic, they will also continue their individual practices, Maurice Scheltens as a still-life photographer, Liesbeth Abbenes as an artist making wall tapestries.

After being delighted with Melbourne's Midnight Juggernauts first album, I naturally expected their talent to progress and continue into the second album. However, I am not really feeling the direction which they are now focussed on. It has gone from the deliciously dreamy electronic waves to a new 80's rock vibe. Anyway, their music video for Lara Vs The Savage Pack is actually really cool. It's directed by Lucinda Schreiber & Beatrice Pegard. I like the paper work, though am sensing that all of this paper madness may be a trend which defines the 2010 which is not necessacerily a bad thing...

Berlin: Luna Land

Luna Land was a strange music festival a few weeks ago in Berlin. Strange in that they opened the infamous Spreewald Park for the first time in eight years after it was closed down due to the owner's naughty habits. It used to be a theme park with giant dinosaurs and odd animals and they remain today, older more worn and even creepier. Unfortunately the weather was not in our favour, with rain threatening, but we managed to make the most of the great music and location in the dappled sunshine anyway!

Understanding Shakespere

B.A. thesis project of Stephan Thiel at the Interfacedesign program of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam,Understanding Shakespeare is an attempt to create a new visual understanding of the work by analysing most frequently used words for each character. Using Processing, a scene is represented by a block of text and scaled relatively according to its number of words. Characters are ordered by appearance from left to right throughout the play. The major character’s speeches are highlighted to illustrate their amounts of spoken words as compared to the rest of the play.

The visualizations were designed as large scale prints (90cm x ~220cm) for an exhibition scenario that would enable a broad audience tore-understand Shakespeare. They were created using mainly Processing and toxiclibs (for geometry and color calculations) as well as several other Natural Language Processing libraries (i.e. Classifier4J).

Here's what he says about his work:

My photographic work is about everyday life, my surroundings, as Marcopoulos said "Within arms' reach". From this aspect of recounting I try to show a state of our mind, between boredom, reflexion and waiting. There is a pure truth about the subject which I try to reveal. The characters of my boredom's theater evolve on a stage, when they are not present, I photograph empty scapes, in which I try to make feel this loneliness.
I get inspiration from photographers such as Nan Goldin, Wolfgang Tillmans or Ari Marcopoulos, above-quoted, those photographers have in common the use of their friends as subject, this choice is difficult because it can easily fall into pathos or family photograph album, however I think it's a powerful choice because based on a subject very close to the artist's person ality. The use of daily life is also chosen by fiction : nouvelle vague cinema, put up this notion of immediacy, banality that is why I'm verry attached to this cinema. Rohmer Truffaut, Godard and more recently Wender, Van Sant, Jarmusch. The titles of my pictures series are quote of those movies...

To answer your question: they were recently produced in Australia, so it may take a while for them to arrive in the the UK. But to be honest with you, I’m happy enough with these digital representations – they look terrific! This image reminded me of a book that my parents brought for my sister when she was a child. My parents had nicknamed Lauren "Lozzy Lostridge" in honor of the hit television show "Hey, Hey It's Saturday" and the charicter "Ozzy Osterich." So, when not glued to the TV, I really did love this book and I can only imagine how amazing it would be for Lauren who was the starring damsel of the plot.

I have never really followed Lady Gaga enough to form an opinion of her. I guess to me, like to many she seems an enigma and I struggle to understand what she communicates. I guess that's a great thing. I can't comment on her music, having clearly a very different taste to what she offers, but her at least she is entertaining. Plus, she allowed me to enjoy my morning by leading me to the talented Nick Knight.

LADY GAGA + VANITY FAIR

So far the September covers that have leaked are a snoozefest. Lady Gaga’s Vanity Fair cover is the one that stands out the most as the most refreshing and beautiful. As usual, Nicola Formichetti was responsible for the styling, and Nick Knight (whom Gaga has worked with numerous times before) was the photographer, so Gaga should’ve been pretty comfortable on set. She’s got guts jumping in those Nina Ricci inspired shoes by Noritaka Tatehana. Although I love the video, I’m underwhelmed by the actual editorial. Nick could have done better creativity wise. Looks included pieces from Alexander McQueen, Armani Privé, and Noritaka Tatehana.

The Turkish markets always offer a bargain too goo for me to pass up on. On Friday, I bargained a deal and am the proud owner of a whole 2kgs of carrots, haggled for 50c. Now the question is what to do with them. This easy salad is the perfect delicious and healthy solution. Only grating is required, as well as lime, garlic, fresh dill, mint, parsley, beetroot and some Bulgarian goats cheese. Grate away and ta da! A colourful and tasty salad that is hopefully going to put a smile on the lovely ladies faces who I am about to visit. Happy Sunday!

Olfaur Eliasson

There was absolutely no way that I could let the Olafur Eliasson exhibition currently showing here in Berlin pass me by. What fun it was - it is exactly the way art should be, fun, interactive and allowing the viewer an alternative insight on art. It was in no way pretentious or stuffy - simply inspiring, intelligent and accessable.

We loved wandering through "Your Atmospheric Colour Atlas" as it simultaneously felt to me as though I was both lost and blind, yet free and dreaming. What a lovely experience.

What a cool photo this is. And what a cool guy that took this photo. I know, I know - I am about to sound cluckier than a Spring chicken, but, yes - please bear with me while I talk about weddings again (mum, dad don't start fretting)... I am rather proud to have this joyous treat of a wedding gift sitting on my Tisch. Plus, luckily considering that I don't own a record player (yet, the time will come my freinds) I can hear the song right through these computer speakers. Sigh, what would we do without the internet.

Plus, I am kind of proud to see my logo work being accepted into the coolness of record design! Whee. What a damn cool couple.

Schroading myself in black today has me curiously looking for colours in every colour. And - I certainly do not need to look too much further than Emma Lundgren's beautiful work here.

Iris Van Herpen

Wow, well this was a glorious find for the end of the day. What absolutely amazing work I found at Iris Van Herpen.
Crystallization is the title of Iris van Herpen her Spring Summer 2011 collection. One of the pieces was a collaboration with the architect Daniel Widrig. This is not the first piece of clothing made with a rapid prototyping technique, but maybe one with the most complex shape. It was printed in 3D by .MGX.

Wedding

I have never had so much fun at a wedding. Sure, I have only attended a handful of weddings but I have a feeling that this one was particularly special. It was the guests which really made it amazing, an interesting group of people who all had something really special to add. The delicious vegen food and the fun in getting dressed up were just the start of the joy which we had. Dancing till the tiny hours was made possible due to some damn inspiring people.
I hope to add some more pictures soon, though the problem is that I was having a little too much fun to actually take a lot of photos...
